Getting Around

There are three options: Rent a car, take a taxi, or simply stay at your resort or hotel and let the tour operators pick you up if you choose to participate in an offsite activity.

Taxi drivers are licensed and regulated. We have always found them to be very courteous and friendly. They are only too happy to engage in conversation and to act as tour guides as you travel about. Most of the taxis are minivans carrying 8 passengers. The taxis are very clean and well maintained. There are set fares for various destinations so no haggling is necessary, and the taxi drivers are trustworthy.

Renting a car is easy. There is a rental car agency on site of many of the resorts and hotels and many more are just a phone call away. The agencies will come to you. To rent a car, you need a temporary license. There is no test ... it is just a matter of paying the license fee (around $20 at last check). The agency will usually handle the licensing arrangements for you. The cars are generally in good condition with various options. Be sure to ask for air conditioning!

The rules of the road may require some adjustment (driving on the left side of the road for instance). The international rental agencies are well represented (Hertz, Avis, Budget, etc.), but there are many reputable local agencies as well. On Antigua we work with a local company called Thrifty, specializing in tropical vacation car rentals.

We would be happy to arrange for a car rental if you like. But, it is not necessary to make such arrangements beforehand, and many choose to get acclimated to the rhythm of the island for a few days before deciding upon a car rental. Such decisions can be made after arrival. But, if you plan to visit during the busy winter season, and you are sure that you want to rent a car, it may be prudent to make such arrangements beforehand.
